Social media users were exposed to misinformation about the coronavirus in light of the information epidemic crisis

Abstract

That study aimed to measure the extant of exposure of users of social media platforms to disinformation about coronavirus during infodemic crisis, analyze views experts’ of content producers.  Interpret the main reasons of infodemic. The study uses online survey method on purposive sample of 200 participants’ aged 18 to 60 years and in-depth interviews with 6 content producers to collect quantitative& qualitative data. The findings showed that there is impact between users trust level and information sharing rate, there is correlation relationship between users’ credibility level and information sharing rate. In –depth interviews analysis showed the main reasons behind sample choosing for social media platforms as a source of information during health crises Coronavirus are the lack of confidence in official state channels, the absence of transparency. There is a credibility crisis as a result of a stereotype inherited from previous political situations. There is lack of collective awareness of users of the latest developments, such as the World Health Organization’s initiative with Facebook, Twitter, Google News, and Google IOS to block misinformation and disinformation during infodemic crisis which spread through social media platforms. The experts also suggest restructuring the official state media to restore confidence and credibility among the public. In addition to Stakeholders should raise collective awareness of users, monitoring and correcting disinformation to eliminate infodemic.
