The effects of the use of social networking sites on the level of self-disclosure of Saudi girls and its relation to social capital

Abstract

Through survey and focus group discussions on 407 Saudi female students of king Abdul-Aziz university to measure the effects of using social media on self expressing from the perspective of social capital theory this study found that:
- About 77.6% of the sample has real accounts and about 80% publish real information about their selves except the profile picture.
- Snap chat the most used platform then instagram then twitter and from the focus group discussion the study found that the usage of the platform is according to the type of issue as twitter for news , instagram for shopping and snap chat for sharing photos and social relations and also the sample said that there are some issues that they don’t talk about through social media like the political issues and families problems
- the preferred platform is due to interaction by35.5% , then privacy 32.7% then multi attributes by 31.7% and the site richness is more important than the social capital  in self expression
- about the self expression motives chatting was the first by 49.3% then participating by 47.1% and about 41% use social media as alternative to self expression than the real life .
