Egyptian university students’ use of social media for cross-border communication and its relationship to transformations in the network of "cultural identity" values

Abstract

he research problem is concerned with answering the following two main questions:
- How do levels of social media usage affect the type of usage? And does the heavy usage of social media among youth mean a greater expansion of cross-border communication with their international counterparts?
- How does the exchange of information and ideas between Egyptian youth and their international counterparts affect the personal values ​​network around which cultural identity is centered? And what are the strategies that govern the communication related to cultural identity through social media, according to the Olson model?

The researcher applied the descriptive and analytical approach, using the survey method to collect data. The sample of the study consists of 200 Cairo University Students. The main results of the study concluded that the majority of the respondents are heavy users of social media with chatting with others coming at the forefront motive behind using these social media platforms.
