Abstract

The main research problem of this study is to reveal the role that social media networks play in activating the electoral participation of Iraqi youth. The research falls under the descriptive approach, using the questionnaire as a research tool which was distributed to a sample of 140 individuals, consisting of students and employees. The sample consists of students, employees, self-employment, and unemployed segments between the age group of 18 to 40 years old. Moreover, the most important results of the research state that:
1- Facebook achieved the highest percentage of used social media platforms for monitoring election news, with 96.8%.
2- According to 58.1% of the sample, the motives behind their use of these networks are that they provide the opportunity to express opinions with absolute freedom. Meanwhile, around 53% mentioned the need to keep up with news about election candidates.

We deduce from these results that the role played by social media, which cannot be ignored especially among the youth, is a negative role that calls for a boycott of elections.
