Abstract

The study aimed to identify the journalists’ views in Emirati newspapers of the ethics of professional practice. Conducted on a sample of 60 individual journalists in the Emirati newspapers, the study reached a number of results; the most important of which is that the majority of the sample believe that the editorial policy and the journalist are the basis for the newspapers’ commitment to ethical standards, and that the standards of honesty, accuracy, and objectivity are among the most important standards that the contact person in the Emirati newspapers takes into account when selecting and publishing topics. The results also indicated that journalists in Emirati newspapers rely on journalistic codes of ethics in the first place as their reference when facing an ethical dilemma. The study recommended the necessity of separating ownership from editorial departments in order to prevent the interference of financiers and advertisers in the editorial policy of newspapers. Adding media literacy courses to academic curricula in schools in all Arab countries, similar to some Arab countries that have followed this path. Organizations, clubs and press unions should hold regular workshops on ethics in professional practice, in which journalists discuss the ethical dilemmas they face during their practice and how to address them.
