The Role of Digital Media in Shaping Egyptian Public Attitudes toward Mental Health Disorders: A Field Study

Abstract

Society puts obstacles in the way of the mentally ill person expressing himself. sometimes; this is due to the social stigma attached to him, such as being not religiously committed or weak in faith, or being mentally unfit, or being a person who does not appreciate the value of his blessings, and other forms of social stigma that Arab society sometimes attaches to those who suffer from mental illness, The research problem of this study seeks to answer two main questions, which are: What are the attitudes of the Egyptian public towards mental health disorders? What is the role of digital media in shaping these trends? The study relied on the theory of “social stigma” and a field study was applied on  184 Egyptian audience of digital content viewers  The study concluded that the Egyptian audience, has positive attitudes and views in terms of the cognitive level towards mental patient and the stigma related to the individual’s information, judgments and beliefs, while it has a neutral to rejecting view in terms of the emotional level, which are the feelings it has towards illness and mental patients. Its view was positive in the behavioral level related to the social integration of the mental patient in , superficial relationship, they refuse the idea of  have close relation ship  with them as (friendship, marriage).
