Media treatment of historical events on YouTube

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the media treatment of historical events on YouTube. The analytical study sample was a deliberate sample that the researcher identified based on a survey study of the three most followed channels on YouTube in terms of the number of subscriptions, namely Reham Ayad's channel, which has 1.74 million subscribers, 100 Great channel, which has 1.05 million subscribers, and Amr Haridi's channel, which has 712 thousand subscribers. The researcher conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 90 videos viewed on these historical channels at a rate of 30 videos per channel, during the month of September 2023. The study reached a number of results, the most important of which are:

Modern and contemporary history was the most discussed temporal divisions in the historical videos under study, at a rate of 86.8%, followed by medieval history at a rate of 28.8%. Political history was the most discussed temporal division in the historical videos under study, at a rate of 66.6%, then social history in second place at a rate of 35.5%.
The goal of introducing a certain personality's life and its aspects came at the forefront of the goals that historical YouTube channels seek to achieve at 51%, followed by the goal of stimulating loyalty and belonging and strengthening Islamic identity at 33.3%.
Rational appeals were used in all historical content on YouTube, as the appeal of mentioning information was used in all historical content at 100%, and the use of emotional appeals came at a large rate in historical content on YouTube, as the appeal of exaggeration and hyperbole came at 72%, then the appeal of linguistic and rhetorical methods at 52%.
Most of the study sample relied on mentioning the sources from which the episode information was taken at 96.6%.
Colloquial language was the most used in historical YouTube channels at 66.7%.
The viewership volume on historical videos was average; as videos with a viewership size ranging from one million to 2 million views came in first place at 61%.
The number of likes on historical videos was average; videos with likes ranging from 20,000 to less than 40,000 came in first place with 44.4%, and the number of comments on historical videos was average; videos with comments ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 comments came in first place with 42.2%.
