Attitudes of the media elite towards media disinformation on social networking sites and its relationship to metaverse applications

Abstract

The metaverse world represents a very dangerous shift in the perception of the true meaning of reality, which will represent in one of its periods the problem of differentiating between the real and virtual world and will change many concepts of human communication that will shift from real reality to virtual reality.
The study aimed to identify the attitudes of the media elite towards media disinformation on social networking sites and its relationship to metaverse applications, the study relied on the media survey methodology, and a deliberate sample of the study population was selected to meet the needs of the study and serve its objectives. It relied on the model of uses and effects.
The study found that the elite relied on social networking sites in the information published on various issues, where the percentage of elites who rely on them was moderate.
And the study revealed that the academic and media elite do not trust at all what these sites provide them with information on various issues, the majority of the academic and media elite reported that they were "sometimes" exposed to media disinformation on social media.
And the results also showed that the level of knowledge of the elite using techniques to combat disinformation on social media sites was moderate.
There were many methods of disinformation on social networking sites from the point of view of the elite, and the method of manipulating and generalizing terms to achieve a goal ranked first, while the uses of metaverse in social networking sites ranked first The multiplicity of ways and forms of content dissemination and the speed of access to and dissemination of news.
The study also found that the type of information that is frequently used by metaverse applications for misinformation and falsification from the point of view of the study sample is political information in the first place, and that the most exporters of misleading news using metaverse applications through social networking sites are the media in the first place by 83.2%, followed by external parties by 82.5%, and the most important proposals of the study, which may contribute to confronting the media disinformation of the metaverse through social networking sites, was the proposal to verify the existence of other sites that published the news by 89.2%.
