Recent Trends in Digital Media Risk Studies

Abstract

The study is one of the descriptive and analytical studies, as it focused on monitoring, describing and analyzing recent research trends and the development of the scientific approach to the phenomenon of digital media risks in its various aspects, it relied on Meta-analysis of 131 Arab and foreign studies that dealt with this phenomenon in the time frame from 2018 to 2022.
The research trends of Arab and foreign literature varied and included 6 trends: the general risks of digital media, the risks of awareness and cultural identity, the risks of extremism and terrorist ideology, the risks of influencing society's values and ethics, the risks of cybercrime, and the subjective and psychological risks of users. Despite this diversity, most studies emphasized its negative effects on society, family, and individuals, especially children, adolescents, and youth.
The results of the analysis showed that the uses and gratifications theory ranked first in the theoretical frameworks used, that descriptive studies prevailed, and survey approach was at the forefront of the research methods that were employed, followed by the analytical approach, while the questionnaire leaded data collection tools.
The study presented the future research vision in the field of digital media and social media risks, which included the research interest by which researches should based on, theoretical and methodological visions for it, and the agenda for future researches in this field.
