Psychological and social effects of smartphone applications

Abstract

The study is related to the use of smart phone applications by youth, focusing on the TikTok application -the short video application, which has recently gained wide popularity.
This current study is a qualitative study, as it relies in its approach on the focus group tool of a sample of youth, and the study revealed that the application helped users to overcome the feeling of loneliness as it was used during the period of quarantine as a result of the precautionary measures of the Corona virus pendamic.
   The study also found that the most prominent positive psychological effects are advocacy uses, and escape from stress, and the most prominent negative psychological effects are jealousy, frustration and depression, anxiety and turmoil, obsession, and harassment and bulling.
   While it showed that the most prominent positive social effects are a supportive tool for social communication, awareness campaigns, acquiring new skills, knowledge of new products, and that the most prominent negative social effects are weak social communication, family grumbling, isolation and introversion, efficient academic achievement, and wasting time.
