Effects of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic on the personality of teenagers and the intensity of their internet use

Abstract

Aimof the work:The study aimed to reveal “The effects of social distancing during the Corona pandemic on the dimensions and aspects of the personality of teenagers, the intensity of their use of the Internet and its psychological effects on them, and proposals for avoiding or minimizing the possible negative impacts of these effects.”
Methods: It is a descriptive studies that used the “descriptive method” through which, the “survey method” was used, in both its descriptive and analytical parts, depending on the sample survey method, by applying it to a sample of teenagers in pre-university education “preparatory-secondary stages” in Egyptian schools in the “Cairo and Gharbia” governorates, with (600) boys and girls, as the study used the "comparative  method" for comparison between the respondents. The study relied on several theoretical approaches in the fields of “psychology, sociology, and media,” to achieve the objectives of the study, answer its questions and test its hypotheses, which are “the theory of social interaction - the theory of a sense of psychological cohesion and the theory of dependence on the media,” and it used the form of the “investigation and several "measures", as tools for data collection.
The results of the study are: “The level of  teenagers’ commitment to social distancing during the Corona pandemic was high by (67.70%) of the total study sample, and that one of the most important reasons for teenagers ’commitment to social distancing is to protect oneself and others from contracting the virus, and that social aspects The personality of teenagers is most affected by social distancing, followed by psychological aspects, then health, then relationship with parents, and that the most psychological effects of the intensity of  teenagers' use of the Internet were on the "body image" of teenager girls more than boys, followed by the dimensions of "life satisfaction - anxiety and tension" - Sleep disturbances - self-esteem and respect - self-concept - self-confidence  and  self-efficacy "respectively.
